Education The School District of Fort Atkinson is large enough to have resources, but small enough to be personal. Its mission is to deliver quality opportunities and services to every student to enable them to achieve their academic and personal potential. The district has six schools: four neighborhood elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. The high school, built in 1998 following the approval of a $26 million referendum, is technologically advanced and a model for other communities. The district offers a wide range of programs for gifted students and those with special needs. District students consistently rank higher than the national average on ACT scores. Advanced placement courses are available to college-bound students. In addition to the many national and state scholarships. locally sponsored scholarships of about $300,000 are awarded annually to graduating seniors. Fort’s public schools have become the choice for many families who reside in other communities, but have their children schooled here. The new high school is the most technologically advanced facility in the area. All schools have local computer networks and are connected to one another via a wide-area network. Sharing resources with the Madison Area Technical College (MATC), which has a campus adjacent to the high school, provides additional educational opportunities through distance learning centers. Students receive hands-on work experience through interaction with local businesses. Community projects are part of course work for high school credit. Fort Atkinson also offers three parochial schools and numerous pre-school and day care centers. Additional hubs for cultural activities include a first class public library dedicated to life-long learning and a museum recognized by both state and national awards for its collections and programs. In addition to the local MATC campus, the UW-Whitewater campus is located only eight miles to the southeast. Easy commutes provide access to UW-Madison, Edgewood College in Madison, Beloit College in Beloit and Carroll College in Waukesha.
