FORT ATKINSON AREA ATTRACTIONS

AtmosphAir Skydiving Center
Offers a unique tour experience, and no you don’t have to jump!  Experience the thrills of skydiving from afar and watch as the head instructor rides to 12,500 feet in the air and exits the airplane with a brightl0cikored parachute. 

Aztalan State Park
The Aztalan State Park includes 172 acres of wooded and prairie area.  It is well known for being one of the "most important archeological sites" in Wisconsin. There are many Indian mounds within the park, they were thought to be built by Indians between 1000-1300 AD.  Enjoy the park between 6am and 11pm daily. 

Bicentennial Park and Riverwalk
Fort’s newest park will anchor the west entrance of the spectacular Fort Riverwalk. Bicentennial Park is slated to be finished in 2006, but during the meantime, the Riverwalk is still open and offers a beautiful stroll along the river and downtown.

Café Carpe
Cafe Carpe has an excellent reputation as an alternative music scene while serving excellent food as well. The Carpe is a restaurant and bar that also includes a separate room for musical performances. 

Council for the Performing Arts
The Council for the Performing Arts is known for affordable and culturally valuable entertainment.  Enjoy musical shows, plays and children's productions.  The Council for the Performing Arts is the leading countywide organization for cultural enrichment, bringing music, theater and the arts into our communities and schools.

Family Aquatic Center
The Family Aquatic Center offers swimming lessons during the morning hours and is open Weekdays: Noon-4:00pm, 6:30-8:30pm and Weekends: 1:00-7:00pm. The Aquatic Centers offers a 175-foot waterslide, mini waterslides, heated water, diving boards, shallow child’s beach, playgrounds, ice cream & Concessions, 6-lane pool with basketball and much more.

Fireside Dinner Theatre
One of the Midwest's most popular professional theatres, located in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, The Fireside is proud to celebrate 40 years of family hospitality. Fort Replica Glacial River Bike Trail
A 2.2 bicycle and pedestrian trail connecting Fort’s downtown with Jefferson County Parks’ 7-mile Glacial River Trail. The trial is 12 feet wide and is now open from N. Main St. to Farmco Lane. The Grand Opening is expected in July.

Historic Downtown Shopping District
Fort Atkinson’s historic Main Street provides a variety of shopping experiences in quaint stores with friendly merchants who know you by name. Retailers throughout the community pride themselves on individualized, personal service. Fine furniture, art, jewelry, beautiful florists designs, unusual antiques and business and sports attire can all be found downtown.

Hoard Historical Museum
A local history museum with a big story to tell, the Hoard Museum is like no other.  Here you’ll meet the Sauk warrior Black Hawk and hear the story of the 1832 Black Hawk War.  Find out what kind of soldier young Abraham Lincoln was and learn how “Fort Atkinson” came to be.  Then, let us introduce you to two locals of whom we’re very proud - William Dempster Hoard, the father of the Wisconsin dairy industry, and world famous poet Lorine Niedecker.  In between all this, you’ll see a dazzling collection of Native American artifacts, quilts, local artwork and much more. Visitors will also enjoy The National Diary Shrine's Visitors Center, which features a multimedia show that captures the sights and sounds of dairy farming – past, present and future.

Jefferson County Indian Mounds
The Jefferson County Indian Mounds include 11 Ancient Indian Effigy Mounds.  They are thought to have survived about 1,500 years.  The mounds are located along Koshkonong Mounds Road off of Old Hwy 26.  The mounds include bird and conical mounds as well as an old Indian trail.  A turtle Mound is also still visible and used to appear in The World Book Encyclopedia. 

Jones Dairy Farm Retail Store
Pick up a little "Farm Fresh Goodness" while you are in Fort Atkinson.  Jones Dairy Farm was started in 1889 and is still run by the Jones family, they are famous for their excellent ham, bacon and sausage, so pick up your favorite items from the retail store, along with other great Wisconsin treats. 

Koshkonong Mounds
Enjoy the Excellent golf course that was built in 1924 along with the pro shop that holds everything you need.  Koshkonong also offers a restaurant, banquet facilities, and a junior golf program. 

Lorine Niedecker Cabin
In 1903 Lorine Niedecker was born in Fort Atkinson on Blackhawk Island.  She lived with her parents where her father rented fishing and hunting cabins.  Lorine work at many area business throughout her life.  They included Hoards Dairyman, the Library, and Fort Atkinson Memorial Hospital.  When she was 60 years old she was married for a second time and moved to Milwaukee.  Her poems were not noticed until later in her life, and many family member s did not know she even wrote poetry.  You can view the Niedecker cabin on Blackhawk Island.

Panther Intaglio
The Panther Intaglio is located on the west bank of the Rock River on Hwy 106 leaving Fort Atkinson.  There were originally 9 Panthers and 2 bear intaglios in the surrounding area, but only this one in Fort Atkinson remains.  It is in tact except for a small piece of the tail, which was ruined when a drive way was put in.  It is unknown as to why the mound was built, there are many theories, but it was believed to be used for ceremonial purposes at about 1000 AD.

Spring Creek
Spring Creek is a golf course that was established in 1988.  It is well known for its unique triple-tee option, so each golfer can golf to their ability and use a different course each time.  Spring Creek also offers an 18-hole putting g course.  Spring Creek is great for all ages and abilities and also offers a 15-stall natural turf range, pro-shop and clubhouse. 

The Fort
Yes, we really do have a fort, and it is the scene of the annual Memorial Day event, the Buckskinner's Rendezvous, a reenactment of fur-trading days in the 1830s, complete with authentic costumes, food, music, and competitions such as knife and axe throwing.  Held in the 113-acre Rock River Park.
